This LJ is for the Scrabble LJ community about my set of games versus Quackle Championship Player. Before the Nationals in 2008 I played a set of 500 games versus Championship Player. At the end of it all, I lost 248-252. The average score is 432-415 in favor of Quackle. I did not play all that well, although I played better at the end than at the beginning, and started off a little rusty.
I will keep comments in my journal to an absolute minimum. I will not substantiate my plays.
Since I was playing a lot of games, I took some shortcuts. I really didn't play endgames optimally when the game was over, so you should ignore most of my endgame play. In most of the endgames and preendgames that matter I played very well, with a few exceptions.
There was also a time limitation. Since I was playing 500 games, and I was limiting myself to 3 minutes per turn, except for the preendgame and endgame turns where I got 5 minutes. This time allocation is different than in tournaments. This probably didn't affect some of the gross horrible errors that I made, but it probably caused me to miss some of the lower probability bingos and maybe some of the 9s that I might have found if I were given the proper amount of time to think, since during tournaments I might spend 6 or 8 minutes with a rack like those. I'll flag down these misses when they are made, but the ugly misses probably were not affected.
Also, Quackle did shut down midway through one game. It was up 85-57 at this time and on turn. So it was definitely a slight favorite when it shut down. It does this once in a while for me, but I think it's my computer.
I think that this journal will hopefully make the following points:
1. Quackle is not the Scrabble icon everyone has set it up to be. I think Quackle is a great tool, and Quackle plays very well. There are times in a tournament where I think emulating Quackle is a very good idea. And I think Quackle championship player is good enough to beat everyone but the top 5 players in the world. Since Quackle is recognized by the community as such a powerful force, I think it is up to theorists to actively use Quackle and outline very carefully what Quackle's weaknesses are. Soon I will produce something which does this in a very methodical way. That being said, I think I play a lot like Quackle in a lot of positions, especially in tournaments. I don't play as much like Quackle as many of the other young stars (
jasonkb ,
drbing ,
olaugh and Nigel Richards all play more similarly to Quackle than me)
2. Kenji really makes some stupid errors. If you want fodder to say how much Kenji sucks at Scrabble, you've definitely come to the right place. I expect a lot of jokes at my expense.
I may also throw in some live annotated games from tournaments as well.
